Thin Formed Chip Saw / Grooving Process

Client Challenges

・If the heat sink grooves are perfectly straight, the crimped sections distort during the crimping process, leading to instability in the machined areas.
・To improve cooling performance, the client wanted to reduce the spacing between fins and increase their quantity.
・Although carbide saws were used to narrow fin spacing, the cost burden was significant.

Our Approach

・By angling the formed grooving profile for the crimped sections, we successfully stabilized the shape and structural integrity of the crimped components.
・While conventional chip saws were limited to a 45° groove angle between fins, our proprietary special grinding process enabled sharper angles below 45°, allowing narrower fin spacing and an increased number of fins.
・Although using solid carbide metal slitting saws could resolve most of the groove profile issues, their high cost remained the biggest obstacle. By successfully transitioning to our custom tip saws, tool expenses were drastically improved, leading to major cost savings.
